T-dependent nuclear hyperfine coupling at the In site in CeIrIn$$_{5}$$

Kambe, Shinsaku; Sakai, Hironori; Tokunaga, Yo; Matsuda, Tatsuma; Haga, Yoshinori; Takeuchi, Tetsuya*; Onuki, Yoshichika*; Walstedt, R. E.*

We report an $$^{115}$$In NMR study of a single-crystal sample of the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn$$_5$$. The observed non-linear variation of Knight Shift with static susceptibility in the normal state is consistent with the two-fluid (components) model of Nakatsuji et al, indicating that two individual contributions to static susceptibility exist. However, our results can also be understood in terms of a T-dependent hyperfine coupling, which accounts for the spin-lattice relaxation data naturally on the basis of a one-component dynamical susceptibility. In addition, the observed T-dependence of the hyperfine coupling is scaled to a density of states given by dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We believe that this contrast between the static and dynamical properties is a crucial dual nature of the heavy fermion crossover, which related with the coherence between localized and itinerant excitations.

We have successfully performed an $$^{17}$$O NMR for the first time on Americium dioxide (AmO$$_2$$). We observed a drastic broadening of the NMR spectrum, after a sudden drop of NMR signal intensity below $$T_0$$. These data provide the first microscopic evidence for a phase transition as a bulk property in this system. In the ordered state, we found a spectrum with a triangular line shape, which resembles neither that of UO$$_2$$ nor NpO$$_2$$. It is also suggested that there is considerable damage to the sample induced by self-radiation effects from the alpha decay of $$^{243}$$Am.

Dilute La-substitutions in CeRhIn$$_5$$ studied by means of NMR/NQR techniques

The effect of dilute La substitution in Ce$$_{1-x}$$La$$_{x}$$RhIn$$_{5}$$ (0$$le$$x$$le$$0.07) has been investigated microscopically by nuclear magnetic/quadrupole resonance (NMR/NQR). By the dilute La substitutions, the 4$$nu_{rm Q}$$ lines for In(1) sites are found to be undisturbed and to have a reasonably narrow width, even in the ordered AF state. These 4$$nu_{rm Q}$$ positions in the La-substituted CeRhIn$$_{5}$$ indicate a decrease of the internal field on In(1) sites, due to the reduction of hyperfine couplings by La substitutions. The spin-lattice relaxation rates ($$1/T_{1}$$) using these 4$$nu_{rm Q}$$ lines at high temperatures can be understood by the reduction of exchange energy and effective moments. On the other hand, $$1/T_{1}$$ in the AF ordered state can be explained by a gapped Fermi surface and spin fluctuations of uncompensated localized Ce moments near the La ions.

We have measured the magnetization of an uranium chalcogenide compound $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ under high pressure by piston cylinder and indenter type cells up to 2.42 GPa in a commercial SQUID magnetometer. The compound is a narrow-gap semiconductor that does not order magnetically down to 0.3 K at 1 bar. In this study, it was found that a ferromagnetic state is induced above 1 GPa. The pressure phase diagram were obtained. The values of the spontaneous magnetic moment at 0 K are less than 0.1 $${mu}_{rm B}/{rm U}$$, suggesting that the pressure-induced phase is a very weak ferromagnetic state. Considering the CEF singlet ground state in $$beta$$-US$$_2$$, it is suggest that the ferromagnetic state is an "induced-magnetic phase" often observed in some praseodymium compounds such as Pr$$_3$$Tl. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the mean field theory.

A series of cubic SmX$$_3$$ (X=In, Sn, Pb) compounds has a $$Gamma_8$$ crystalline-electric-field ground state with various multipolar degrees of freedom. These show phase transitions at low temperatures and a possibility of multipolar ordering has been suggested. However, no microscopic experimental data is available so far and details of the ordered states have not been clarified yet. We performed muon spin relaxation measurements in order to elucidate nature of multipoles in these systems. A breaking of time-reversal symmetry was observed in all the ordered phases in zero applied field, indicating the primary order parameters are magnetic. We also obtained information about the ordered structures from a microscopic point of view.

YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ is one of valence fluctuating compounds. Though there are a few temperature ($$T$$)-dependent photoemission spectroscopy (PES) measurements for YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, there are different interpretations of the obtained spectra with each other. The previous studies were performed by using the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. The VUV-PES spectra have considerably large contribution of the surface state. In order to examine the bulk electronic state in detail, it is needed to suppress the surface contribution. The soft X-ray PES (SX-PES) is a powerful tool to investigate the bulk electronic state. The SX-PES measurements were performed at BL23SU in SPring-8. In our SX-PES spectra, the surface Yb$$^{2+}$$ 4$$f$$ contribution is very small. With increasing $$T$$, the bulk Yb$$^{2+}$$ 4$$f$$ peaks shift toward the higher energy side, while the Yb$$^{3+}$$ multiplets do not move. Since the energy shift cannot be explained in the single impurity Anderson model, the experimental results indicate the Kondo lattice effects play important roles for YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$.
